What is home health care?

1

What is home health care?

A simple way to explain home health care is health care services given in the home.

  •  These services can include more than health care but also at-home help such as meal preparation, housekeeping, and transportation.

  • A home health care aid assists senior or disabled clients to remain home while receiving care like a skilled nursing facility (SNF).

2

The demand for home health care has increased

Seniors and disabled people prefer to be at home.

  • It is more convenient and less expensive.

  • As Definitive Healthcareindicates, home health care is also a safer option for patients as they are less likely to be exposed to infections or injury.

3

Patient Outcome Improvement

90% of seniors want to stay home vs. going to a nursing care facility.

Home health care aides help seniors and those with disabilities remain healthy at home by ensuring that their medication schedules are adhered to and preparing meals to facilitate a healthy, balanced diet. Aides also help seniors and disabled individuals stay active by providing transportation services and creating independence.

  • HCAOA stated that a study published in the Journal of Neurology indicated that seniors who were self-described as lonely were more likely to develop dementia than those who did not.

  • Another study showed that seniors receiving home health care reported 25% fewer doctor visits annually and a decline in hospital admissions related to dementia than those without in-home health care services.

The bottom line is that in-home health care improves health outcomes and reduces healthcare costs for seniors and disabled individuals.

Discussion Topic: My Brother's Keeper

On September 16, 2019, a young man suffering from substance use disorder (SUD) received drugs laced with a deadly amount of fentanyl and went to sleep that evening and never woke up.   The young man was the owner’s younger brother.  SUD had a significant grip on his life, ultimately leading to his untimely death at 36. His death was devastating to our family. Therefore, to honor the memory of our beloved brother, we named the agency, My Brother’s Keeper Home Healthcare.   SUD is real, and many do not understand that it is a disability that impacts not just the person with the disorder but can affect the entire community. Therefore communities must come together to develop and execute preventive methods aid those in need.

What is substance use disorder (SUD)? According to the National Institute of Mental Health, SUD is a mental disorder affecting one’s brain and behavior, causing an inability for the affected individual to control their use of substances such as alcohol, medications, or legal or illegal drugs.   SUD symptoms range from moderate to severe and can be treated. Please click here to find out ways that you can help and support a loved one who is suffering from SUD.

As the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration communicated, National Prevention Week is scheduled for May 12 – 18, 2024.    As a result, MKB will contribute money to support the activities planned in Pittsburgh, PA, during that week. Furthermore, MBK will host an event at Point State Park on September 16 to bring awareness of substance use disorder. Food and refreshments will be provided, and donations will be used to support Pittsburgh’s Rehabilitation and Mental Health facilities throughout the city.

Please join us in working to create awareness and prevent SUD! My Brother’s Keeper Home Healthcare is Always There to Care.

At My Brother's Keeper Home Healthcare, we are committed to ensuring our clients receive care in a safe, supported environment. Before employment at MBK, all our caregivers must endure a background check, be vetted extensively, and be monitored to ensure that they provide a safe environment for our clients.

Did you know…that the World Health Organization states that  1 in 6 people 60 years and older have suffered from abuse in 2022? Furthermore, 70% of disabled people have suffered abuse and are more likely to be sexually abused, as stated by Sanctuary for Families in 2022.

The National Institute on Aging states that abuse can have long term effects on the abused especially in older or disabled people leading to physical and mental health issues and possibly premature death.   Abuse can result in anxiety and depression, the abused in some cases may even thing that they were responsible for the abuse.  The victims of abuse may need to participate in support groups or receive counseling.

Because a person does not have bruises on scars does not mean that they have not been abused. Physical abuse is not the only type that occurs. According to the National Institute on Aging, different types of abuse include physical, emotional, neglect, abandonment, sexual, and financial. Therefore, we must be cognizant of various behaviors and other indicators. To learn the warning signs of abuse, please review the Adult Protective Services site here.

If you suspect abuse of any type, please do not hesitate to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline.    This organization is available 24/7 and can be contacted via phone, text, or email.

We must work together to stop the abuse of those in need! It is our responsibility to protect them from abuse! Please feel free to contact us if you need more information or have questions. We at My Brother's Keeper Home Healthcare are Always There to Care.

Home Health Care is important because it allows you or your loved ones to be cared for in a comfortable and familiar environment.   Due to technological advancements, many previously required healthcare treatments that were conducted at hospitals or doctor's offices can now be done at home.

Home healthcare is much less expensive and can be just as beneficial as care provided in a hospital or nursing facility.
